Blue Ridge Mountain Parkway

We spent the day driving on this quiet and beautiful highway. The mountains really do appear blue!

We left Asheville after breakfast in bright sunshine with the promise of a sunny morning with rain in the late afternoon. For once the weather forecast was totally accurate!

The Blue Parkway stretches for hundreds of miles and yes does do to Virginia although our drive was just in North Carolina.

There were plenty of scenic stops along the way and luckily we were just below the level of the clouds.

As the next shot shows we got pretty high, remember the highest mountain in the UK is only 3,000 and at these elevations it was quite cool!

Being America, there is always someone interesting along the way and today proved no exception. We met a girl of about 20 that was taking her pet lizard for a drive into the mountains!

Our last stop of the day was a tough hike down into the valley to see a waterfall. It wasn't an easy climb, steep at times and obstacles such as trees in the way!

The waterfall at the bottom was quite impressive and as we contemplated the walk up the side of the mountain we saw a snake sitting on a rock!

The walk back up was quite fun and we made it back to the parking lot just as the rains came.

We had a really nice day and think that in the autumn with the leaves changing colour it would be an amazingly different drive.
