Rio Favella

As Gillian said in the earlier post, we had a quiet 5 minutes at the appropriate UK time for the cremation and although she was not there in person, Gillian was certainly there in spirit.

Rio Favella sounds like he could be a good footballer! The morning trip was to one of the slum areas of Rio that until recently were 'no go' areas. There is a new mayor who is trying to clean up the City and therefore some of these areas are opening up.

In some ways it was depressing to see how some people have to live but as we have seen in India and other parts of Asia it makes us appreciate just how lucky we are. The claim to fame of this Favela is that Micheal Jackson used it for the video of his song 'Don't they care about us?' We were driven to the top of the Favela and then walked down accompanied by a guide (no police!). The people we saw and it wasn't that many seemed friendly enough and didn't mind us being there and certainly didn't look for money.
Although it is an incredibly poor area everyone seemed to have Hi Definition Satellite dishes and people were keeping the insides of the houses clean and tidy......however outside was a different picture.
It is fascinating to glimpse upon this world but we were both thankful that we could get in a car and come away....... back to 'normal'.
